Oh my goodness has 2016 turned out to be a year! When I posted my goals for this year, I had no idea the next time I would sit down to write my next blog post would be seven months later. Time flies. Let me catch you up on what you’ve missed.
In February I got engaged! Adam completely surprised me the day before we left on a week-long cruise with an escape room themed proposal scavenger hunt. It took me 45 minutes to complete the hunt based on Schnapps’ adventures around my apartment, complete with Scrabble pieces, a lock box, luggage locks, quotes, books, DVDs and seemingly a zillion other things. I loved it because it was so us, and it showed the differences in how our minds work. Adam the engineer, had a flowchart mapping out my journey to the final proposal. My liberal arts mind went off in a few different directions, but we made it to the end with Adam on one knee offering the most gorgeous ring ever, built around the stone from his mother’s engagement ring. Naturally, I cried. Our wedding date is set for June 24, 2017 at Purdue University, and the planning has been so crazy and fun so far.
The next day we left on a seven-day cruise to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico. I had been on a hardcore diet leading up to the cruise, so I celebrated our vacation by eating approximately ten banana Baileys crème brûlées over the week. They were heavenly. We rode horses in the ocean in Jamaica, went snorkeling in Cozumel and played a lot of shuffleboard to the amusement of pretty much everyone who saw us playing.
When we got back to port, Adam had an email waiting in his inbox from SpaceX in Los Angeles offering him the final interview in their hiring process. A week later we found out he got the job and we would be moving to sunny LA! In March, Adam moved into our new apartment six blocks from the beach in Hermosa Beach, CA. I stayed behind wanting to hold onto my Houston job until my lease ran out at the end of May. Fortunately, my company didn’t want to let me go and hired me on as a full-time social media consultant so I could keep my job and work remotely from LA.
Thanks to my “new” consulting gig, I officially launched my own company, CS Digital. (Even when I take Adam’s last name, my initials will stay the same!) I offer social media consulting and copywriting services including web writing, marketing emails and whatever else is thrown my way. Since Adam works such crazy hours, I decided I might as well work crazy hours too and add some money to our wedding savings, so I picked up a couple clients out here. One is just steps away on our pier, so it’s been nice to have an office to pop into now that I’m working from home.
Over the three months I’ve been on the West Coast I have absolutely fallen in love with stand-up paddle-boarding. The marina near us has a platform where sea lions sunbath, and I’m pretty sure I will never get tired of watching them bark at each other. We’re hoping to buy boards soon and work up the courage to start surf lessons.
This last weekend we went camping in Joshua Tree National Park to see the Perseids meteor shower. Schnapps joined us for her first camping trip and had a great time greeting everyone at our campsite and even climbing a few rocks with us.
Now I think you’re caught up on the events and adventures of this year so far. I promise it won’t be another seven months before you see another post!
